STAR WARS BEHIND THE SCENES — THE MAKING OF A NEW HOPE
The making of Star Wars A New Hope is stuff of legend. Today, blockbuster movies are a dime-a-dozen and the magic of how they’re actually created has all but disappeared. But in 1977, George Lucas and his team at ILM were still magicians, crafting never-before-seen imagery that changed the industry forever. In this short making of Star Wars documentary, we’ll explain how they evolved practical effects, compositing techniques, and sound design.
STAR WARS MOVIES SPECIAL EFFECTS
Compared to the scope and vision of George Lucas’ galaxy far, far away, Star Wars was a low-budget production. One of the ways they were able to pull this off was to use practical effects. This ranged from making Luke’s landspeeder to be a functional vehicle but appeared to float above the ground, to the extensive use of matte paintings that could extend the sets and add extras.
STAR WARS VISUAL EFFECTS
What the crew couldn’t accomplish on set, the visual effects team handled. For example, some of the most dazzling sequences in the film are the space battles. But up until that time, the compositing techniques for photographing a ship in space was very limited. To capture the WWII dogfight footage Lucas shared as inspiration, the ships needed to have more dynamic mobility. The solution was something called the Dykstraflex, a motion-control camera that could be programmed precisely to execute the same movements multiple times. This allowed them to capture as many elements as they needed while giving the ships the desired movement and energy in the frame.
STAR WARS SFX
The final element in creating a fantastical yet believable world was the sound design. To be fair, the concept of a sound designer didn’t even exist yet. Ben Burtt, responsible for the sound effects coined the term for himself, essentially creating a new filmmaking role in the process. Here, too, revolutionary changes were being made to create the most iconic sounds like R2-D2’s bleeps and bloops, Darth Vader’s ominous breathing, and, of course, the hum of the lightsabers. To do this, Burtt mixed the sounds of a humming projector with a TV set — the swinging sabers were created by playing this sound through a speaker and waving a microphone in front of it.
Without all these innovations, there’s a good chance Star Wars would’ve simply gone unnoticed. Instead, it raised the bar for filmmaking in Hollywood with low-budget techniques to create an unforgettable cultural experience.

The Mask is a classic movie that surprisingly still holds up incredibly well even by today's standards, and even though the movie was a great success, it has never really received all the credit it is due. Maybe this is because it was released in 1994, alongside films like Shawshank Redemption, Pulp Fiction, Forrest Gump, or True Lies, or perhaps it is because of its light-hearted comedic screenplay, but The Mask just wasn't taken seriously even though it pushed the limits of what was possible with VFX and became the first film to have a photo-real 3-D cartoon character using computer animation.

The Mask movie was loosely based on a comic of the same name which in turn was based on the works of the cartoonist legend Tex Avery. The works of Tex Avery were heavily referenced throughout the movie in various ways: with props, Images, Gags and iconic movements.
In fact, Avery's work was referenced so much that it actually became part of the look and the personality of The Mask himself and for the style of the visual effects.
VFX artists at ILM studied Tex Avery's work and began to build up a library of drawings and clips for use as reference material.
ILM then did a photo shoot with Jim Carrey and then their art department began manipulating his face to get an idea of how far they could go and just how it would look...

Before the widespread use of CGI, filmmakers used surprising in-camera tricks and optical illusions to fool audiences. Early filmmakers like Georges Méliès could add a hidden cut to film a wide array of illusions. Creative composites allowed for an invisible character in 1933's “The Invisible Man” and for Moses to part the sea in “The Ten Commandments.” Artists literally painted on top of shots to extend sets in “Citizen Kane” and create fantasy worlds in “The Wizard of Oz.” While most of these methods are obsolete today, new technologies like the LED projection used in “The Mandalorian” and the motion-control cameras in 2020's “The Invisible Man” build off these past methods.

7 Classic Movie Tricks That Led To Modern CGI | Movies Insider
Storyboarding is all about clear communication of your vision. Storyboards can help you construct your film, plan your shots and your edit, and visually communicate what you want to the rest of your team.
Kevin Senzaki, confirmed sound wizard and also storyboard artist for VGHS and other RocketJump projects, covers the basics of what storyboards are used for and why. He also covers who typically creates them, what formats they come in, and the different styles and elements that are most often used to create clear and informative boards. If you are totally averse to drawing of any kind, you're in luck-- Kevin also shows you some alternatives to storyboards that can help you achieve the same goals in planning out your film.
