“Klaus,” Netflix’s first animated film, is an origin story of Santa Claus. Because the Oscar-nominated movie appeals to nostalgia, director Sergio Pablos and his team at The SPA Studios in Madrid decided to make the film in 2D. But they also wanted to advance the look, so they developed new technology that adds details like lighting and texture to the characters that make them appear 3D. We spoke with Pablos to find out how they made the innovative film, which earned an Academy Award nomination for best Animated Feature and seven Annie Awards. “Klaus” stars Jason Schwartzman, J.K. Simmons, Rashida Jones, Will Sasso, Norm MacDonald, and Joan Cusack.

On a cold Norway night, Jaizybel Ednöra, a young witchy wolf go down the mountains chasing down a will'o'/the wisps to add it to her magic relic collection. when thing takes suddently a different turn for her...

I am so happy to be able to premiere my student film EDNÖRA with you today!!

I cannot express how proud and satisfied i am about this short!! It might be just a minute, but that one minute is the first and biggest accomplishement of my life. Being nominated at 3 festivals, winning 2 grants and winning best animated short of the year at swiff festival 2023 is the biggest honor i could have imagineD and hope for. It took me so long to get there but i feel it was so worth it!

I am truly truly grateful to everyone who supported me during the making of that hell job. I also want to take a minute to thank my family, friends, classmates, teacher and most of all, you folks who stick around followed and watched me grow slowly during 4 long years of labour. I would be nothing of what i am today if it wasnt from you.

Special thanks to my voice actor, post-prod artist @blacatLIVE
and my amazing musician/composer @merlinmus

I hope you enjoyed my clumsy little wolfy chasing her wisp in her cold Norway forest!

THE HISTORY OF ANIMATION & EVOLUTION OF ANIMATION STYLES

From the beginning of film history, filmmakers have experimented with animation in many forms and techniques. In this video, we will lay out a brief history of animation and the evolution of animation styles. Including the techniques, the technologies, the differences, and the various mediums animators use to give their inanimate subjects the illusion of life.

The word animation comes from Latin "animatio" and means “a bestowing of life.” Like film, animation is the illusion of movement through the rapid succession of images created by a process called “persistence of vision.” This works because when we see one image, it is retained on our retina for a fraction of a second, just long enough for a second image to appear — and thus, we see a single moving image instead of a series of flashing static images.

Traditional animation was the dominant type of animation in the 20th century. Basically, this involves drawing images, frame-by-frame. As the years went on, new techniques were developed to turn animation into more of an assembly line process. Animators like Walt Disney and his studio helped turn animation into a viable commercial and artistic medium.

Rotoscoping is a technique that uses live-action footage as a reference to create animation with more realistic movement. Today, we can see variations of this process in films like Richard Linklater’s Waking Life and A Scanner Darkly. Anime is an umbrella term used to describe Japanese animation, which tends to share many of the same styles and techniques as Western animation, along with some key deviations.

Stop-motion animation is also similar to traditional animation, except the subjects are often physical objects instead of drawings, like puppets or figurines. Claymation is a sub-type of stop-motion animation that uses plasticine clay. Cut-out animation uses shapes or characters cut out of paper or fabric and moved frame-by-frame. More recently, 3D animation has replaced 2D animation as the most common animation style. And, yet, it follows the same general principles.

Do you miss 2D animated movies? I do! Major studios have long dropped 2D animation in feature films, but their reasons just aren't good enough to stop 2D animation in movies forever.
***This video focuses on western animation, since 2D animation is still prevalent in anime, etc.

This clip is taken from a 1938 short called "How Walt Disney Cartoons Are Made". I have simply taken out a lot of the footage devoted to publicising the Film "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs". I have done this not because I dislike the film (it is, in fact, one of my all-time favourites) but to make it short to show in class.

I'm a bit sad there's not as much time to work on personal animations anymore, and next year there will be even less. But through my professional work I've met so many incredible people and worked on amazing projects, that I'm very excited for 2023 and the future.

With the release of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, we've never been closer to completely blurring the line between 2D and 3D animation. Why does "choppy" animation work so well, and why are animators so excited about it?

Process of a 2d Rough Animation shot.

Some people were asking for roughs of this shot to see the process a bit, and here is what I was able to dig up.

There is some live action reference that I filmed first, followed by the first rough version in which everything having been mostly worked out (after many revisions). After that I realized tying down from that version would be pretty difficult so I wanted to have something closer to the final model while I fleshed out the cape/punches more. After that is the final tie down.

There is a lot I would like to change if I could go back and do it again, but I learned a lot on this shot as it was pretty challenging, but a lot of fun all the same.

Also the timing charts were more notes for myself and I wouldn't recommend using them to learn from as things changed timing wise and I don't believe they were updated.

Thanks for checking out the video!
